This diverse community has a long history and a thriving culture, with a range of shops, events, and landmarks. It’s hard to find a more welcoming place than Germantown, with its caring population of nearly 40,000 citizens. Read below for some history, fun facts and things to do in the great city of Germantown, TN!

Germantown was first settled by Europeans in the early nineteenth century, and was initially known as a utopian community for freed slaves. Founded by Miss Frances Wrights, Germantown’s Nashoba Plantation was one of the only communities in the area until the late 1830s. This plantation was a commune designed to educate slaves and prepare them for freedom. The plantation was shut down in 1828, but is still remembered today as an attempt at egalitarian and utopian society.

Named after surveyor N.T. German, Germantown was officially incorporated in 1841. Though the population severely declined around the Civil War, it has now recovered, remaining one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the area.

For those interested in local history, Fort Germantown is home to replica howitzer cannons and other Union Army artifacts. Built to house 250 troops, this fort marks one of several built along the Mississippi River, right on the border between Union and Confederate forces. Fort Germantown was initially built to guard the regional railroad, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Looking for local culture? The Germantown Performing Arts Centre is a great place to find jazz, theater, opera, and more. In September, you can enjoy a week of free events during the Germantown Festival, enjoying arts/crafts, rides, games, live entertainment, and more.

For those who want a bite to eat, the Germantown Commissary has some of the best barbeque around. Named for a small country store that opened in the area, the Commissary is known for its Southern-style cuisine with large portions and tons of flavor. You won’t find a better place to enjoy pure Tennessee cooking.
